The European Parliament’s vote on the restriction of lead and its compounds

On 13 February, the European Parliament blocked the proposed restriction of lead and its compounds drawn up by the European Commission.

The PVC industry through both VinylPlus and EuPC (the Transformer Association) has shown with two press releases their opposition to this decision which contradicts the outcome of the rigorous scientific assessment conducted over the last five years by the European Chemical Substances Agency (ECHA) which has concluded that recycling is currently the best management option for PVC waste containing these additives, as an alternative to landfilling or incineration.

This vote also implies the delay in blocking imports of lead-containing PVC items in Europe. Circular Economy.

Despite this rejection, the European Commission will be able to resubmit a new restriction proposal. The PVC supply chain will work to ensure that authorities and MEPs reconsider this decision as soon as possible.
